Kate Philp

Kate Philp was born in Africa, brought up in Scotland and currently lives in North Northumberland where contrasting stretches of sandy beaches and rugged cliffs feature in her work. She also enjoys the white sands and turquoise waters of the West Coast and Islands which inspired many paintings by Scottish colourist Bunty Cadell, who was in fact Kate's grandmother's cousin.

Kate graduated from Edinburgh University in 1993 with a degree in biological science and moved through garden design into a full time career painting in 1997. She has also travelled extensively throughout Europe.

Subject matter is varied, with land and seascapes sitting alongside still life and figurative work and latterly more abstract pieces. The use of both acrylic and watercolour allows for bold texture and strength of palette but also subtle and sensitive washes and lines when subject matter requires a more spontaneous approach.

Many solo exhibitions have been held locally and further afield over the last 25 years in leading contemporary galleries, and Kate has also exhibited in the Mall Galleries, London.
