Bright red public telephone boxes or kiosks, are an iconic symbol of Britain, and British Architecture. They are recognisable the World over. Stewart Wright has photographed these iconic red boxes in the Scottish tourist Capital Edinburgh.
The Public telephone box has been through eight designs, from the K1 (Kiosk number 1) in the 1920's designed by Somerville and Company to the K8 designed by Bruce Martin in 1968. The most famous and iconic national telephone box design was created in 1924 by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott.
Scott won a design competition to standardised telephone kiosks throughout the country, run by the Metropolitan Boroughs Joint Standing Committee and Royal Fine Art Commission.
Sir Giles Gilbert Scott's winning K2 design was intended to be silver in colour, with a green-blue interior, but since Post boxes were red and easy to spot in the street, it made sense to use the same colour for the national telephone kiosk.
